Rock of Ages Trailhead

Info: I drove to the trailhead in a stock 2022 4wd Toyota Tacoma. This late in the summer I would rate this only a 2. Earlier in the season when the creek crossing is higher with snowmelt I get the 3 rating due to ground clearance issues. Other than being bumpy in a few spots, it wasn't bad if you drive slow enough.

Info: I also noted NO porta potties at the trailhead as of 8/16/25 and 8/17/25 (perhaps due to federal budget cuts?)

Info: Went up there with a OWB, no issues at all, other cars with lower clearance were there too.

Info: Was up this wknd and the road was clear though you could see downed aspens cut up & pushed off to the sides. Two muddy pothole areas but overall was doable in my stock promaster van and also saw another promaster van at the TH. Honestly though parts of the 60M road (622 on google) was rougher before getting to the actual 59H road to the TH. Disappointed that I couldn't find the portapotty people mentioned?

Info: Road currently clear of trees. Lots of aspens that look like they're ready to go in another wind event. Watch the forecast and be prepared. Some big, muddy potholes on either side of Big Bear Creek. These and the creek crossing were passable in a stock Outback. Please take it slow through here to keep from degrading the road further.

Info: In the early morning hours of 6/21, numerous trees fell on the road to Rock of Ages trailhead. Thankfully I got there right before midnight on 6/20. A Dodge Ram 2500 and my Jeep were stranded. After summiting Wilson Peak, I called San Miguel Sheriff's office and requested assistance. When we got back to the trailhead 1.5 hours later there was still a felled tree blocking our escape from the trailhead parking lot. We had towstraps and the truck was able to pull these huge aspens out of the way. Long story short...the road is open thanks to Sheldon's old Dodge!

Info: Attempted a summit today, two miles before the trailhead there’s a huge tree down, blocking the entire road for several feet on both sides. No way to get around it in a vehicle of any kind, so either bring your chainsaw or your flying car. Not saying the additional two miles at the beginning is the sole reason I didn’t summit but it certainly didn’t help so I’m using that as my excuse 😉

Info: Road is in good shape. I was a little hesitant to attempt it in my van, but a source told me Id be fine. I have a 144 wheel base 4x4 sprinter and I made it just fine.

Info: Got my Crosstrek to the trailhead on 7/20. The lip going in/out of the creek made me a bit nervous since my car has a pretty bad approach angle, but there wasn't any scraping. That muddy section just below the creek crossing would still be a pretty big challenge for anything without 4WD/AWD but it's short enough that all most folks need is a little momentum to avoid getting stuck.

Vehicles at the TH when I was there: Yukon, GX470, CR-V, Suburban, lifted work van, two Land Rovers, two 4Runners, and two Crosstreks including mine.

Info: Drove Jeep Wrangler to the TH. Creek is fine, mud section prior still rather messy not passable w/o 4x4 currently IMO

Info: Drove a stock Outback Wilderness to the TH, saw a few other Subarus there which were not wilderness trim.

Creek crossing was fine, mud section right before the crossing is the crux of the drive. Photo taken on the way back, we kept right (left if going to the TH) and didnt have any problems.

Portapotty at the trailhead is pleasant potty, clean and had plenty of toilet paper and hand sanitizer.

Info: The previously mentioned muddy section just before Big Bear Creek is still there and the creek itself is probably at 5-6 inches deep. I only saw 4wd vehicles past those two obstacles. I did not like my chances in a Rav4 and parked on the road before the creek and mud.

Info: Be weary of mud/really soft ground near Big Bear Creek. If you don't have 4WD, I recommend stopping ~1.5 to 2 miles before the TH to avoid getting stuck. After hours of trying to get unstuck I eventually had to get my rental minivan towed out (-$500) and another group got their van stuck (a first for me, still feeling pretty dumb for getting in that predicament!). Tow truck guy said people get stuck there all the time.

Shout out to Jake the firefighter and Lee Ann as well as the Moab conservation group for all your help trying to get me unstuck! Yall the real MVPs!

Info: We were able to drive to 9800. Might be able to get a little farther (.1mi) in something huge and with chains, but that was it for the stock 4runner. It was intermittent snow (but mostly snow) on the 3mi to the TH, and then continuous snow from there up into Silver Pick. Snow was mostly firm, even in the afternoon sun... Pic is of the TH parking lot.

Info: Road becomes impassable at 9100ft, shortly after the Silverpick/60M/622 road junction. Appears to be continuous snow after that point. Unless it gets plowed, I wouldn't expect it to melt out past this point for a couple weeks.
