Peak Condition Updates

Route: East Ridge

Info: Parked at the 2WD trailhead. Started around 7:30am. Scanned the surrounding ridges and peaks and the snow pack looked minimal and patchy, but this was deceiving. Decided to leave my snowshoes and gaiters in the truck, Big mistake. The 2mi walk up the 4X4 road to Rainbow trail junction was easy. Road was 90% hardpacked snow/ice after tree line. The initial hike up to gain the ridge line after leaving Rainbow trail was mostly snow free. The next 0.6mi after gaining the ridge had a established and mostly supportive boot pack. The next 0.5mi had some boot pack to follow, but the snow gradually became deeper and less supportive. The boot pack I was following stopped around 10,800'. I tried to push forward but I was post holing knee to leg deep in warming snow pack, so I turned around. Gaiters would have been helpful. I am not sure snowshoes would have helped with all the downed trees and brush to navigate around. It was very warm out and not much wind. Would have been a great day to summit. Unsure if conditions on the ridge would have improved once above tree line.

Info: Road was mostly clear of snow for about a mile up from the 2wd TH then semi continuous until closer to rainbow trail. The short path up to the ridge was mostly clear of snow, and then from the ridge to treeline was mostly continuous snow where spikes were beneficial. After treeline the snow was practically non-existent. There was a 50 ft patch around 13.3 that we were able to navigate without traction. There was not enough snow to make snowshoes beneficial anywhere on this route. The standard approach looked like it had solid snow coverage up until at least tree line.

Info: Dry to 2w parking lot. Dry up the road with a few patches of snow, then all snow up to Rainbow Trail. Downed trees starting about half way up to Rainbow Trail. Bootable from TH and along Rainbow Trail. Big dry patches once starting up the ridge. We followed the old boot/ski track (as best we could around all the fallen trees - there are tons) and the snow was pretty solid, stayed in boots until upper part of the steep section where the snow turned sugar (maybe 10,500?), then put on snowshoes. Ditched the snowshoes at treeline. Slope leading up to summit is dry with some patches of snow. 6 people total on the mountain (3 sets of pairs). I attempted to head up above treeline, but was not feeling well at all (turns out I got my son's cold, lol) so we turned around. Wind was really starting to pick up as well. It took us some time to get back down (navigating around all the fallen trees and following our tracks), we wore snowshoes all the way down until the dry section, just above the Rainbow Trail, then booted out. Should be a solid trail to follow until the next snow storm. Go get it.

Info: My first ever sunset summit! Well packed in trail up the 4wd road and even on rainbow trail. Put snowshoes on somewhere around 10.5k and kept them on to treeline. After treeline it's basically summer conditions; a few minor snowfields but easily passable or avoidable. Started at 12:15, summit at 4:50 (20 min too late to watch the entire sunset from the summit sadly) back to car at 9:45

Info: Drove up to the 4wd trailhead-road was dry. Only vehicle at the parking lot. Camped at the southern end of South Colony lakes. Some ice (minimal)on the trail up to the lake, but can get around it easily. Didn't need spikes all the way up to Humboldt Peak. This required a bit more rock-hopping along the summit ridge, as the North aspects had some snow. Easy to follow the cairns. Extremely windy on the summit, but a beautiful day and gorgeous hike overall.

Info: Gorgeous day! Was supposed to be very windy, and there were moments, but it was relatively calm at the summit. Used microspikes and poles - hardly needed the spikes. Left the 4wd trailhead at 5:30 am and summited at 9:30 am. Some snow and ice on the road up, but easily avoidable. Quite a bit of mud on the way down, but mostly avoidable. 4WD road was dry!

Info: Snow throughout the trail, although spikes are not needed until you gain the ridge/saddle. This area is packed down, but it is more difficult to hike in the afternoon when the snow is soft. Trail is also very muddy in the afternoon. Views are beautiful with the crestones being covered in snow.

Info: Updated to reflect Oct 18 trail conditions: There are signficant icy and snowy patches en route to the summit, but the additional sun exposure, and less steep grade, made this route manageable with only spikes under last weekend's conditions. I re-ascended Humboldt Peak for the second time in a couple of weeks after bailing on the Crestones due to not being able to make the final ascent to Broken Hand Pass without crampons and an ice axe. The approach to the standard west ridge route faces south and gets a fair amount of sunlight. This made the snow and ice layer softer than on the approach to BHP and manageable with only spikes rather than crampons and an ice axe. The upper reaches of the summit had more snow and harder ice, but it was easy to boulder hop to avoid the slipperiest areas of hard ice. The views were incredibly clear last weekend and it may still be possible to ascend Humboldt this month without the level of equipment required to get over Broken Hand Pass safely.

Info: Traction required! Upper section of the road from the 4WD TH to the actual trail portion has a lot of snow/ice patches that were quite slippery in the morning, wore spikes from that point. Lots of water running down the road and trail as well. The trail from the lakes to the saddle has consistent snow and traction is required unless for some reason you like waiting until it's soft in the afternoon and it's still slippery then anyway. Encountered one group on my way up that bailed after getting only a quarter of the way up because they didn't have traction. From the saddle to the summit has decent snow cover, route can be a little tricky to find if you are trying to stay on the trail, but cairns are fairly frequent and really you just go up and you'll find the summit. A few wind gusts but a great day with blue skies.

Info: Fall colors coming in strong. No snow up to South Colony Lakes and minimal to no snow on the west ridge. Snow dusting on the north face of Humboldt, Crestone Needle, and Peak

Camped at lower trailhead 2 nights in a row and both nights low was between 32 - 36 F.

Info: Absolutely gorgeous fall day on Humboldt -- peak colors, warm, slight breeze. No snow on the trail. The Crestones also looked snow free save for a few small patches in the shade. Fall colors in the Sangres are still great.

Info: There was a thin layer of icy snow that began around 12,800'. Ascending further there was a bit more snow and the summit was very icy. I would suggest carrying spikes for this one now.

Info: The road is difficult and considerably worse than I remember it to be, but I didn't drive so perhaps someone who drove the road to the upper trailhead could comment in more detail. Regardless, high clearance required.

Conditions are smooth sailing all the way up to the saddle, and then there are a few social trails up to the false summit that will take some time to navigate. But overall a very nice day, although it looked like Crestone Peak and Needle had a few clouds that stuck around there for the morning.

Info: The road was probably the worst we've driven. We did make it up in our stock Jeep Cherokee, but we also don't care about it too much. We camped about a half mile from the upper TH and drove the rest the next morning. We backpacked about four miles to where we set up basecamp. The trail is mostly exposed with some patches of shade. The mosquitos were bothersome, but not horrible. I've read a lot of reviews mentioning the marmots, but none about the bighorn sheep - they were EVERYWHERE. They would come right into your campsite. At one point, a pack of 8+ were grazing through area we camped. We got up at 4am for a sunrise summit of Humboldt (and missed it by ~30 minutes) but we were the first ones up there! We actually couldn't find the elevation marker. It was beautiful, but it was super windy with no signs of dying down so we didn't spend much time at the top. Note to self: pack a beanie and gloves next time. The trail was mostly straightforward. Cairns helped a lot! We did lose trail for a moment on the descent. I downloaded the trail on Gaia and that got us back on track. This was our dogs' first 14er and they did really well! We had breakfast when we got back to camp around 9am, and backpacked out around 10:30am. We were back at the trailhead by 12:45pm.
