Peak Condition Updates

Info: Drove my 4x4 truck 3 miles up 277 to the creek crossing at 10,850. It wasn't fun, but made it. Parked just after the creek in a large pullout. There was some dispersed camping right there as well. Walked the road to 12,800 and then went straight up the west slope before joining a second road at 13,300 which went directly to the summit ridge. No snow. Looped this with Mt White and Cronin. Both were essentially snow free. Quiet day on Antero. Had the summit to myself. Saw 1 going up as I was descending. There was an abandoned side by side with a broken rear shock pretty high on the road. Cronin was a nice peak. I enjoyed both the SE ridge on ascent and the NW Ridge on descent. Saw 2 goats there as well.

Info: Great sunny day on Antero! One minor snowbank left on a switchback, otherwise you can easily avoid all snow. No need for traction. Took the final ridgeline straight up. Started from the 2wd trailhead around 4:45, summitted at 9:15, left the top at 10 and got back to the trailhead by about 2.

Info: Long tedious road. Road was summer conditions all the way up to 12,500', possibly could have squeezed passed or took it slow. Slight ice flow 1/2 way across road. at 12,800' there is an impassable snow sheet. To be honest, you're better off parking at 12,500. First thats the last area that you can turn around and it's only 50 yard from the ice. It's only a 5-10 min walk to the total ice blockage. After that summer conditions all the way to the top. From 12,5000' to the peak, start time 6:46pm and finish time 9:23pm. Incredible sunset! Made it back home at 2:15am this morning. Exhausted!!!

Info: Still some snow slabs at & above the 4WD TH, did not see any cars past the ~4.5mi mark. Snow melt creating some muddy spots at the start of the ridgeline. The standard routes final switchback to the summit still has a large snowbank on it so I, & those I bumped into, took the ridgeline straight up instead. Overall solid late May conditions

Info: Creek is totally dry except for short section at 11,800ft which is fed from a snow patch.

We backpacked and camped at 11,700ft thinking there was no water so we’re relieved in the morning to find it. Water source likely wont last all Summer so will need to hike in all your water starting late June I’d guess.

Info: Little snow, no equipment needed. There is only one water source about 5 miles in near tree-line, and lasts for 1/4 of a mile. There is good camping near the water source if you are backpacking in.

Info: Still some patches of snow on the lower switch backs and near the summit. They are all avoidable except for about a 10' stretch before the final summit push.

Info: Clear hiking the whole way without microspikes. All of the downed trees were cleared the same day we hiked so now the only obstacle to driving the whole way is snow berms at multiple points above the treeline.

Info: We approached from Brown's Creek Trail on the south side of Mount Antero. This trail is dry and in good condition with plenty of water in the rivers and lakes to refill water supply. Based on our observation Little Brown's Creek Trail is also in good hiking condition. Once on the 4WD road at the intersection of Brown's Creek 4WD and Little Brown's Creek Trail there is a decent amount of snow on the road. Above 12,500 ft the roads are not passable via vehicle, but the road/trail is fully hikable all the way up to the summit of Mount Antero. The snow patches are scattered across the mountain but are avoidable. No special equipment is required. Also, there are lots of downed trees on Brown's Creek 4WD Road so vehicles are only able to make it to the river crossing at the intersection with Baldwin Creek 4WD Road until the trees are cleared. Great hike and views the whole way!

Info: Hit Antero from Raspberry Gulch, a lesser known route, I honestly liked it.

Saw a couple avalanches/wet slides today on the east face of Antero.

Was able to basically avoid snow entirely on this route and wore trail runners

Info: Tuesday (3/31) I reached the Mt Antero summit on the West Slopes route from the 2wd TH (start of Baldwin Gulch/277 Rd) The thick ice flows on the road are a yearly late-season tradition and start not even a half mile up, so I don't attempt to drive. I used, and think you need microspikes for the (several places) that were wet and iced over. Between the 3 mile road junction/stream crossing and treeline, the road center is off & on in deep snow with a supportive tracked center. Sometimes it post holed through. It can be avoided. MANY trees and even tangles of trees are down on the #278 road, "at least 22" fitchmt said! Past treeline I stuck with the very wide, and very long switchbacks of the road which always had at least a small section of rock. By the time I got to the mining area/end of the road it was snowing. I took the ridge crest to the summit & did the same returning.
Back below treeline, I talked to two guys in a truck with studded tires that had crossed all the ice flows and also winched a very large downed tree slightly to the side of the road. This happened during the long day I was hiking, so I just saw the before and after! They were the only people I saw, and I had looked pretty closely at Mt White and Browns Creek route from higher up. The snow this day was light & hadn't amounted to much, in fact it was raining & muddy back at the 2wd TH. A big raven spent a while looking at me and my belongings while I was packing up to leave! I'll post the only picture I took. Cheers, Mike

Info: We only made it a quarter mile up before the road became impassable to vehicles due to ice. Even if you did make it past, there's several more snow/ice fields and at least 22 fallen trees over the course of the road. The trail is in summer conditions and easily done in trail runners - no spikes or snowshoes needed.

Info: CR 272 is closed at intersection with CR 274 until April 16, 2026 (seasonal / restoration closure for motorized vehicles). There is day use parking available at this intersection which has ample space for several vehicles. This adds about 1.6mi one-way or 3.2mi roundtrip and about 300ft of elevation bringing total distance to about 19.5mi. The gate on the south side of Browns Creek Trailhead is also closed. I'm not sure if there are closer parking options on that side.

Little Browns Creek trail is bone dry until about 11,200'. Throughout the day most of the snow melted. There's no need to bring any traction or floatation. All snow was easily walked across or skirted with little effort. There are a handful of downed trees laying across the trail. The ridge crest has snow on the leeward (east) side but again is easily maneuvered around.

Info: I didn't hike Antero, but ascended Mt. White via Little Brown's creek and got a good look at the route. It seems to be mostly dry (just trying to provide intel). More info on Little Brown's Creek conditions can be found in the Mt. White conditions update.

Route: west gully
Posted On: 1/18/2026, By: jacolc
Info: Used snowshoe only at lower part of west gully on Antero and below north ridge of Cronin . At upper part of west face I fallow shallow depression right of rocky bend. A lot of loose rock, scree. Until more snow, will be much better more to north, directly to summit.
I was not planning to go to Cronin so my nightly descent from north ridge back to valley was not the best choice (steep, rocky, exposed, slippery terrain) . Either the last of bit until packed trail. But there was short sections.
